Bike Mag – Golden Willow Scandium

November 14th, 2009

Bike Magazine’s October 2009 issue features a review of the Golden Willow Scandium by Ryan LaBar:

“There are Autobots, there are Deceptions, and then there is bike maker Bionicon. While the company’s Golden Willow may lack heavy artillery or the ability to morph into a giant talking robot, several months of riding this bike proved that it’s no less of a transformer.”

Busy-Bee Work Weekend

November 5th, 2009

For all those who have generously offered their support and asked what they could do to help us get over the fire, we’ll be hosting a busy-bee work weekend.

Bionicon has the keys to the new office and shop location at 21 Sierra Drive, Kernville, and we’re busy gathering materials, furniture and preparing inventory orders. We’re excited about the move to Kernville!

The work-days are Saturday and Sunday, November 21 and 22, from 8 in the morning until about 5 in the afternoon. We’ll host a barbecue on Saturday night, and will have beer on tap from our neighbors, just a few doors up the road, the Kern River Brewing Company. It should be a really fun weekend.

To sweeten the deal, anyone who comes out and puts in at least one day over the weekend will be eligible for a 10% discount on parts and services at the shop throughout the 2010 calendar year (excluding sale and clearance items).

If you have tools for sheetrocking, carpentry, or any other things we may need, please bring them. We’ll be doing some demolition work (moving walls and doors, removing restaurant equipment), sheetrock, paint, electrical and some plumbing work. We’ll be building warehouse shelf storage and counters.

Thanks again for all the support. It should be a fun, productive couple of days.

Start Date: 2009-11-21                                                                                                                                                                                                                   Start Time: 08:00
End Date: 2009-11-22
End Time: 17:00

Thanks!

Bionicon USA Has a New Home

November 3rd, 2009

We’ve been a bit quiet lately, but working hard behind the scenes to get back up and running. We found a location a month ago, and thanks to some generous local support, we have now signed a lease on a new building.

We’re very excited about the new location and the possibilities it brings. It is in Kernville, behind and a few doors down from the Kern River Brewing Company. It’s an easy walk from the center of town, from Frandy Park, Riverside Park, and the many restaurants and businesses in Kernville.

The two-story building was previously a restaurant and includes a two-bedroom apartment. Beginning early next year, we’ll be able to host dealers, press and riders right here in town.

There is some work to be done on the building. Old restaurant equipment will need to be removed, and the building will need paint and some TLC. For everyone who has generously offered to help us get back up and running we’re going to have a busy-bee work day, tentatively scheduled for November 14. We’ll be hosting a barbecue (of course), and Kern River Brewing has generously offered to make sure none of the volunteers go thirsty!

Many people have been so helpful during this process, and without the community support from the Kern River Valley we would probably not have a new location so soon after a devastating fire. As much of our heart and soul as we put into the Wofford Heights office, we’re even more excited to be in the heart of Kernville, and look forward to seeing you there soon after we open for business in December.

The new address is:

Bionicon USA
21 Sierra Drive
Kernville, CA 93238

Read on for some photos and map to the new location.

Progress on the Fire Recovery

October 12th, 2009

Things are progressing slowly, but we’re definitely moving forward and putting the disaster behind us. We’ve been fortunate to have temporary storage, internet and phone access, and a nice quiet place to get things done. We continue to be blessed by great support from the local community. The Kern River Valley is our new home and we’re here to stay.

As can be expected, compiling paperwork and dealing with insurance is tedious, but for the most part, done.

In the meantime we’ve been diligently looking for a new location to resurrect the Bionicon Demo Center and the associated RideKRV bike shop. Good news is that we’re closing in on negotiations for a new location, and we expect to have an official announcement soon.

Thanks to everyone in the local community who has offered to come out and help out with a busy-bee work day. We’re hoping to put your skills to use sometime in early November, and to make a fun day of it with food and liquid refreshments in the Bionicon tradition.

Preparations for the gathering and CORBA Fat Tire Fest are well underway, and our demo fleet from the Pacific Northwest will be here in time for both events.

Stay tuned.

BIONICON USA HEADQUARTERS / DEMO CENTER DESTROYED BY FIRE
Owners see this as a temporary setback and an opportunity to be better; plans to rebuild are already well underway.
Wofford Heights, California: Friday, September 18, not quite two weeks after its official Labor Day weekend opening, the Bionicon USA Headquarters and Demo Center in the Kern River Valley suffered a devastating fire. The building, located on the main road in Wofford Heights, had undergone extensive renovations and improvements in preparation for Bionicon’s move to the Kern Valley. This was the company’s first full-time Demo Center in the U.S.A. Other Bionicon Demo Centers are in the UK, Germany and Switzerland.
Nobody was in the building at the time of the fire, which was first noticed at about 4 p.m.. Neighbors called 911 and reported smoke coming from the roof. When firefighters arrived on the scene they were confronted with flames shooting out of windows, exploding shock cartridges and burning magnesium fork lowers. Owners Paul and Wendy Ferguson arrived on scene just a few minutes later, only to watch the building burn.
Investigators believe the fire was started by a faulty air compressor, though official reports are pending. The fire destroyed the entire inventory of bicycles, parts, frames and components as well as the workshop and the entire fleet of demo bikes.
“The local community has been behind our move to the Kern River Valley from the start,” said Paul Ferguson, owner and CEO of Bionicon USA, “and their support through this tragedy has been really encouraging. They have made it clear how much it means to have a mountain bike company of Bionicon’s caliber doing business here in the valley.”
Bionicon has been welcomed and embraced locally, and in this tragedy that has only become more apparent. There has also been a great outpouring of support from the entire Southern California mountain biking community.
The charred building is uninhabitable and beyond repair. “We’ve received offers of temporary storage and office space, as well as assistance from Bionicon in Germany to get us up and running as soon as possible,” noted Ferguson. “The search is on for a new office, showroom, bike shop and demo center. We have pending inquiries on a couple of locations.”
The valley’s outdoor lifestyle is what attracted the company to the area. There is a vast network of trails, world-class whitewater rafting, climbing, hiking and water sports. The addition of a mountain bike company and full-service bike shop to the valley is crucial to its growth as a mountain biking destination.
Bionicon has been the title sponsor of the famous Keyesville Classic mountain bike race for the past two years, and will continue as organizer and sponsor for the 22nd annual event in 2010. Among the company’s plans are to take a lead role in trail stewardship and mountain bike advocacy in the Kern river Valley. In fact, Bionicon has already opened a dialog with the BLM about potential new trails in the Keyesville area.
The 3rd annual Kern River Valley Gathering, hosted by Bionicon at Keyesville, will still take place over Halloween weekend as planned. The “KRV Gathering” is an open-invitation, informal weekend of mountain biking, camping, barbecues, and camaraderie among mountain bikers from all over the southwest.
Bionicon USA expects to be back in business full-time in a new location in the Kern River Valley by December. Wasting no time, CEO Paul Ferguson replaced his laptop the day after the fire, and at the moment is available by phone or email to support customers and dealers. Parts and inventory are ordered and on their way.
“It feels like we’ve had a practice run at putting together a Demo Center,” said Ferguson, “and this next time around is going to be even better than the original.”
About Bionicon: Bionicon are the original innovators of adjustable geometry and travel mountain bikes. Designed and engineered in Germany since 1999, the company’s bicycles feature a patented system that integrates the front and rear suspension, allowing for a radical change of ride characteristics at the push of a button. Bionicon full-suspension bicycles can change on-the-fly from an aggressive cross-country like climbing position to a relaxed and stable downhill position. Bionicon also manufactures commuter road bikes and a line of technical cycling clothing. Bionicon USA began importing the bicycles to the U.S.A. In 2005, and is the sole North American distributor for Bionicon.

Demo Center Fire

September 19th, 2009

We’re saddenned to report that the new Bionicon Demo Center in Wofford Heights suffered a fire yesterday, Friday September 18, at about 4 in the afternoon.

A few hours after Paul had left the office to attend business in Bakersfield in the early afternoon, the neighbors noticed smoke coming from the windows and called 911. It took some time for the Fire Department to arrive by which time flames were shooting out of the store room and office windows; the building was fully engulfed.

On initial inspection it appears the building and everything in it is a complete loss. All of  the Demo Center’s inventory of bicycles, components, and the demo fleet were lost in the fire.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire started in or near the shop’s air compressor, though fire officials have not yet confirmed the exact cause. The air compressor was in the store room along with the company’s inventory of bikes, components and parts. The intense heat of the fire was evident in the molten masses of aluminum that were once bicycle frames.

We were extremely fortunate that nobody was injured. Perhaps the most disappointing part is the amount of time and effort spent over the past three months to renovate and prepare the buiding for Bionicon, as well as the loss of personal effects and mementos.  The office and Demo Center officially opened only two weeks ago.

This is a major setback for the company, but a temporary one.  We will be re-opening and available for business as soon as possible. Please understand that phone lines are currently down, but we do have intermittent access to email.

The Kern Valley Sun posted a story with pictures of the fire.

We’ll continue to post as more news becomes available.
